Cisco Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) The General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) provides packet radio access for mobile Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). In addition to providing new data services for today's mobile user, GPRS is important as a migration step toward third-generation (3G) networks. GPRS allows network operators to implement IP-based core architecture for data applications, which will continue to be used and expanded for 3G Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service (UMTS) for integrated voice and data applications. The Cisco GPRS solution enables mobile wireless operators to provide advanced mobile data services to network subscribers in all market segments. The Cisco Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) offers standard 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) GPRS functionalities in addition to the Cisco value-added features in a single Cisco router platform. The Cisco IOS Software within the Cisco GGSN provides a sophisticated suite of networking capabilities that reside at the heart of internetworking devices. Cisco GGSN and data network components interoperate with external packet-data networks, and the Cisco GGSN is connected to the Cisco Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN) through an IP-based GPRS backbone network.
